Charge of Goddess & God

Charges of Both Goddess & God

Charge of the Goddess

From Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner

"I am the Great Mother, worshipped by all and existent prior to their consciousness. I am the primal female force, boundless and eternal. "I am the chaste Goddess of the moon, the Lady of all magic. The winds and moving leaves sing my name. I wear the crescent Moon upon my brow and my feet rest among the starry heavens. I am mysteries yet unsolved , a path newly set upon. I am a field untouched by the plow. Rejoice in me and know the fullness of youth. "I am the blessed Mother, the gracious Lady of the harvest. I am clothed with the deep, cool wonder of the Earth and the gold of wheat fields heavy with grain. By me the tides of the Earth are ruled; all things come to fruition according to my season. I am refuge and healing. I am the life-giving Mother, wondrously fertile. "Worship me as the Crone, tender of the unbroken cycle of death and rebirth. I am the wheel, the shadow of the Moon. I rule the tides of women and men and give release and renewal to weary souls. Though the darkness of death is my domain, the joy of birth is my gift. "I am the goddess of the Moon, the Earth, the Seas. My names and strengths are manifold. I pour forth magick and power, peace and wisdom. I am the eternal Maiden, Mother of all, and Crone of darkness, and I send you blessings of limitless love."

CHARGE OF THE GODDESS (Traditional)

Listen to the words of the Great Mother: She, Who was of old also called among mortals, Artemis, Astarte, Athene, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Dana, Arionrhod, Isis, Bride, and by many other Names:

Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month and better it be when the Moon is Full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place and adore the Spirit of Me, Who am Queen of all the Witches.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery yet have not won its deepest secrets; to these will I teach things that are as yet unknown. And ye shall be free from slavery, and as a token that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love all in My praise. For Mine is the ecstasy of the Spirit and Mine also is joy upon Earth, for My love is law unto all beings.

Keep pure your Highest Ideals; strive ever toward them, let naught stop you nor turn you aside, for Mine is the secret door which opens upon the door of youth. And Mine is the Cup of the Wine of Life and the Cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of Immortality.

I am the Gracious Goddess, Who gives the gift of joy unto the hearts of men and women. Upon Earth I give knowledge of the Spirit Eternal and beyond death I give peace, freedom and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all living and My love is poured out upon the Earth.

Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess, She in the dust of Whose feet are the hosts of heaven, Whose body encircles the Universe...

I am the beauty of the green Earth, and the white Moon among the stars, and the Mysteries of the waters, and the desire in the hearts of humans.

Call unto thy soul, arise and come unto Me, for I am the Soul of Nature, Who gives life to the Universe. From Me all things proceed and unto Me all things must return. And before My face, beloved of Gods and of humans, let thine innermost divine self be enfolded in teh rapture of the Infinite.

Let My worship be within the heart that rejoiceth, for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence with you. And thou, who thinkest to seek for Me, know that the seeking and yearning shall avail thee not unless thou knowest the Mystery: that if that which thou seekest, thou findest not within thee, thou shalt never find it without thee. For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

Blessed Be

The Charge of the Goddess ("The Great Mother Charge")

This charge is usually read to new Initiates in the following ritual manner:

The High Priest:

Now listen to the words of the Great Mother, who was of old also called among men Artemis, Astarte, Athene, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Dana, Arianrhod, Isis, Bride, and by many other names. At her altars, the youth of Lacedaemon in Sparta made due sacrifice.

The High Priestess:

Whenever ye have need of any thing, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then ye shall assemble in some secret place, and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all witcheries.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not won its deepest secrets; to these will I teach things that are as yet unknown.

And ye shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites; and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in my praise. For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and mine also is joy on Earth; for my law is love unto all beings.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever towards it, let naught stop you or turn you aside; for mine is the secret door which opens upon the land of youth, and mine is the cup of wine of life, and the cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of immortality.

I am the gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man. Upon Earth, I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace, and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand sacrifice; for behold, I am the Mother of all living, and my love is poured out upon the Earth.

The High Priest:

Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess. She in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, whose body encircleth the universe.

The High Priestess:

I who am the beauty of the green earth, and the white moon among the stars, and the mystery of the waters, and the desire of the heart of man, call unto thy soul: Arise and come unto me; for I am the soul of nature, who gives life to the universe.

From me all things proceed, and unto me all things must return; and before my face, beloved of Gods and of men, let thine innermost divine self be enfolded in the rapture of the infinite.

Let my worship be within the heart that rejoiceth; for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength; power and compassion; honour and humility; mirth and reverence within you.

And thou who thinkest to seek for me, know thy seeking and yearning shall avail thee not unless thou knowest the mystery: that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without thee. For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning; and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

CHARGE OF THE GOD

"I am the radiant King of the Heavens, flooding the Earth with warmth and encouraging the hidden seed of creation to burst forth into manifestation. I life my shining spear to light the lives of all beings and daily pour forth my gold upon the Earth, putting to flight the powers of darkness. "I am the master of the beasts wild and free. I run with the swift stag and soar as a sacred falcon against the shimmering sky. The ancient woods and wild places emanate my powers, and the birds of the air sing my sanctity. "I am also the last harvest, offering up grain and fruits beneath the sickle of time so that all may be nourished. For without planting there can be no harvest; without winter, no spring. "Worship me as the thousand-named Sun of creation, the spirit of the horned stag in the wild, the running wolf, the endless harvest. See in the yearly cycle of festivals my birth, death, and rebirth --- and know thaat such is the destiny of all creation. "I am the spark of life, the radiant Sun, the giver of peace and rest, and I send my rays of blessings to warm the hearts and strengthen the minds of all."

Then you shall be taught to be wise, so in the fullness of time you shall count yourselves among those who serve the Ancients; And you shall grow to love the music of the Woodlands, to dance to the sound of His pipes in step with cloven hooves and the forest song...

And you shall learn the Mystery of Rebirth, filling your heart with Her moonlight, growing in harmony with the Earth, as Her children, protective of your Mother...

And you shall grow in wisdom; and you shall grow in compassion. And in love shall you heal the sick, pursuing the arts of healing, the lore of the Mother's herbs...learning the psychic arts...to cure, to nurture, to help Her children grow. And in wisdom you shall give counsel, knowing the skills of divination, seeing how the children best flow in Universal Harmony, understanding planetary cycles and knowing prophecy.

Thus will you be the Wise Ones, knowing the lores of Nature; the Wiccans of the heaths, of the countryside, the pagans of the cities, knowing all are One to the Mother; knowing all are One to the Father.

Let thy life and the lives to come be in the service of the Lord and the Lady.
